No birthday mood but two podium finishes

30. March 2014

Durbanville – Somerset West, Südafrika

Lukas Flueckiger and Martin Fanger had an excellent start into the eleventh Cape Epic. They finished the prologue, a 23 kilometer time trial, in second place, only twelve seconds behind winners José Hermida und Rudi van Houts.

Thus they had already reached their first goal. And the Swiss duo was able to up the ante on the first stage. Although they had to stop five times to repair punctures caused by thorns, they reached the finish in Robertson in third place.
However; Flueckiger was somewhat unhappy about having missed the chance to get a stage win: „If we had had only one or two defects, we might have been able to win this stage."

The following days brought rain, mud and heat, and Martin Fanger's energy diminished: He began to suffer. „I sort of cracked. Maybe it's because I haven't got enough experience", reasons Fanger. He turned 26 on Friday: „But I had no birthday mood at all during this stage," he admitted.

"Martin had to step in for Ralph (Näf) at very short notice which was not easy for him at all. His form curve has been pointing downwards wheras mine has been pointing upwards", explained Lukas Flueckiger.

"I'm glad to have survived the Cape Epic," Flueckiger was relieved, looking back at all the hardships on the 718 kilometers from Durbanville to Somerset West. However, he also states that this time he does „not feel completely worn out" like he did all the years before after having finished the Cape Epic. „Maybe this is of some advantage concerning my preparation for the world cup in Pietermaritzburg in two weeks."

Moreover, both BMC bikers had had yet another great day on their Four Stroke FS01 29's, finishing fourth in the final stage of the Cape Epic.
