BMC Mountain Bike Racing Team: Maremma Cup – Milatz & Gallati finish in top 10 among world-class field

10. March 2011

Massa Marittima

The BMC Mountain Bike Racing Team took a great deal of self-confidence from this first cross-country race of the year. The cream of world-class mountain biking came together at the weekend to claim the first UCI points of the season. Reigning and former world champions as well as national champions and Olympic medal winners lined up at the start at Massa Marittima in Italy.

Three BMC riders dominated the field of 110 riders right from the start. Led by German champion, Moritz Milatz, in pursuit of Swiss riders, Florian Vogel and Nino Schurter (both riding for the SCOTT Swisspower Team), and Italian champion, Marco Aurelio Fontana (Cannondale Factory Team) in 4th place, Balz Weber was on course for a top 10 finish before he caught a flat tire at an unfortunate time. Nevertheless, after a long walk to the next technical zone, he finished well in 22nd place.

"That really was superb. After I picked up my pace in the middle of the race, I caught up to the world champion and nearly closed the gap on him and Moritz after Moritz's puncture. Moritz was so strong that he immediately made up the places he'd lost and pulled past José Hermida and Manuel Fumic. I'm very happy with my performance. I hadn't expected to finish so far ahead," commented 2010 U23 World Championship bronze medal winner Patrick Gallati, who crossed the finishing line in 9th place.

Julien Tamararcaz, who started the race at the rear of the starting grid with a three-digit start number, steadily overtook other riders to finish in a very creditable 36th place. Old hand and Athletic Director Alex Moos completed an outstanding team result with a 38th place and clocked up valuable race mileage in preparation for his next event, when he teams up with Balz Weber: the Cape Epic in South Africa.
