20. May 2012

In his first competitive start of the season, Andreas Raelert secures second place in a fast Ironman 70.3 St Pölten. Laura Bennett continues on wave of success to win the Ironman 5i50 in Kansas, after successfully qualifying for the Olympics.

Just one week after victory for his younger brother in the Ironman 70.3 Mallorca, Andreas Raelert lined up in an illustrious field of starters for the Ironman 70.3 St Pölten. The fast course promised to deliver a highly competitive event and a close result. And so it was: a large group including almost all the favorites finished the cycle leg together without any individual athlete being able to break away. It was clear that a strong performance would be needed to shake off the other contenders. Raelert, who had run only a few kilometers in the weeks prior to the competition following a thigh injury, succeeded in keeping the strong runner and two-time St Pölten winner Filip Ospaly in his sights. Nevertheless, the BMC athlete was unable to close the gap entirely on the Czech triathlete and crossed the finishing line slightly more than half a minute behind him.

In the USA, it was the turn of Laura Bennett to keep the BMC flag flying: one week after qualifying for the Olympics, the American dominated the Ironman 5i50 in Kansas. In doing so, Bennett showed yet again that she is a force to be reckoned with in non-drafting competitions, too. With the American back on dry land in second place, she completed the cycle leg with the third best time and outperformed her challengers with the best run split of the day.
