Volta a Catalunya, Stage 1: Wyss Fifth In The Escape

18. March 2013

BMC Racing Team's Danilo Wyss finished fifth in Monday's opening stage of the Volta a Catalunya after escaping with a small group on a descent late in the 159.3-kilometer race.

Technical Downhill Splits The Pack
The race looked headed for a bunch sprint with 25 kilometers to go when a 112 km breakaway by Christian Meier (Orica-GreenEDGE) and Cristiano Salerno (Cannondale Pro Cycling) was caught. Wyss said he was in the right place to be one of 13 riders who slipped the pack and finish 28 seconds ahead of the peloton. "The move went in the technical downhill," he said. "I was happy to be in this group with all the general classification riders, but I was tired for the sprint with the up-and-down technical finish." Wyss, who enjoyed his best result of the season, also said he wasn't sure of his form in the sprint, but for good reason. His training was interrupted by the birth of his second child last week. Gianni Meersman (Omega Pharma-Quick Step) took the win ahead of Valerio Agnoli (Astana Pro Team) and Alejandro Valverde (Movistar Team). BMC Racing Team Assistant Director Max Sciandri said Tuesday's stage, which includes four laps of a local circuit with a climb, could also see something other than a field sprint. "We will again be on the coastline and it will be windy, so another tough and demanding race," he said. "But we'll see how the guys are. We're taking things one day at a time."
