Van Avermaet Third At Clasica Ciclista San Sebastian

30. July 2011

San Sebastian, Spain

BMC Racing Team's Greg Van Avermaet sprinted to third place Saturday at Clasica Ciclista San Sebastian to score his sixth top 10 finish in one week's time.

Kroon In The Break

After Philippe Gilbert (Omega Pharma-Lotto) soloed to the win and Carlos Barredo (Rabobank) rolled in 12 seconds later, Van Avermaet took the sprint for third among a chase group of seven that made the selection over the final climb of the 234-kilometer race. "I felt really good after suffering on the Jaizkibel (Cat. 1 climb)," Van Avermaet said. "I was putting everything on my sprint because I knew I was one of the fastest guys in front. But I was also hoping (Samuel) Sanchez and (Frank) Schleck could close the gap to Gilbert." Van Avermaet has been on a tear of late, winning the final stage and the overall of the Tour de Wallonie Wednesday and a stage and the points classification at the Tour of Austria earlier this month. Karsten Kroon did his part early on for the BMC Racing Team, making the day's breakaway that survived for nearly 175 kilometers. "That was a good move because it took a lot of pressure off the team," BMC Racing Team Assistant Director Michael Sayers said.
