Van Avermaet Points Champion At Tour of Austria

10. July 2011

Vienna, Austria

BMC Racing Team's Greg Van Avermaet won the points classification Sunday at the Tour of Austria, capping a race that saw him win one stage, finish in the top 10 in two others and wear the King of the Mountains jersey for two days.

Santambrogio Sixth Overall

Van Avermaet was unable to contest Sunday's final sprint after getting caught behind a crash that took down teammate Taylor Phinney with three kilometers to go in the 122,8 km race. Phinney was OK and able to finish as Daniele Bennati (Leopard Trek) won the stage. Van Avermaet said despite a long classics season, his form is still good. "Just before Austria, I didn't do much training because I have done a lot of races this year," Van Avermaet said. "I came in fresh for the Tour of Austria and from the first day I was feeling good." Fredrik Kessiakoff (Astana) won the race overall as Mauro Santambrogio finished sixth for the BMC Racing Team. "It was a very successful week," Assistant Director Michael Sayers said. "I was very happy with the way the race went and all the guys should be really proud of themselves because they rode very well."
