Tour of Austria, Stage 6: Santaromita's Breakaway Foiled

6. July 2012

Any plans BMC Racing Team's Ivan Santaromita had Friday for gaining time or a stage win at the Tour of Austria were halted when the 11-man breakaway group he was riding in stopped cooperating.

Time Trial Saturday
Santaromita's group made its escape on the first of three climbs in the 185.2 kilometer race. But approaching the feed zone with a two-minute lead and 80 km to go, the group suddenly stopped working. Santaromita said it was both frustrating and puzzling. "It was a good break," he said. "But only three riders – Benat Intxausti, Carlos Betancur and me – were pulling very hard. The other guys weren't working. It was disappointing because we could have made it to the finish." A field sprint ensued and Sacha Modolo (Colnago-CSF) won as Steve Morabito (19th) was the BMC Racing Team's best finisher. Danilo Wyss, who has a pair of top 10 finishes here to his credit, said his work to protect Morabito in strong crosswinds kept him from contesting the sprint. Morabito heads into Saturday's 24.1 km individual time trial in third place overall, 76 seconds off the race lead of Jakob Fuglsang (RadioShack-Nissan) and 12 seconds back of Danilo Di Luca (Acqua & Sapone).
