Tour of Austria, Stage 1: Mountain-Top Finish

30. June 2013

Mathias Frank was the BMC Racing Team's best finisher on the mountain-top finish that began the Tour of Austria Sunday.

Strong Team Effort
The BMC Racing Team worked hard to first bring back a four-man breakaway and then position Frank well at the base of the 20-kilometer climb at the end of the 134.9-km race. "We might have taken control of the race a bit early, but in the end it was just a matter of having the legs on the climb," BMC Racing Team Assistant Director Jackson Stewart said. Frank, who is nursing injuries from a crash at the Swiss national road championships one week ago, said he did not have the legs to follow the attacks. Kevin Seeldraeyers (Astana Pro Team) soloed to the win as the reduced peloton splintered. Frank finished 12th, 61 seconds behind. "I was kind of missing the rhythm a bit, so I had to go my own pace," Frank said. "I was lucky nothing was broken in my crash at nationals. I hit my hands pretty hard and have cuts on right hand and stitches in my right elbow. But it's all healing up very well." Monday's stage will be equally as challenging, Frank said, as it finishes with the ascent of the Kitzbüheler Horn. "Tomorrow is going to be a really a hard climb," he said.
