Tour Down Under Classic Opens 2012 Campaign

15. January 2012

Adelaide, South Australia

The BMC Racing Team began its 2012 season Sunday in front of an estimated crowd of 100,000 that turned out to watch the Santos Down Under Classic criterium in Adelaide.

Prominent In Breakaways

Martin Kohler and Marcus Burghardt each made appearances in breakaways for the BMC racing Team during the 51-kilometer, 30-lap race. Burghardt was part of a nine-man group that enjoyed more than a dozen laps of freedom before being reeled in with eight laps to go. Sprinter Adam Blythe, in his first race for the BMC Racing Team, said the pace was fast right from the gun. "I just trying to save as much energy as possible," he said. "Inside of couple laps to go, we moved up (but) I just didn't have the legs today. The team did a good job, though. I haven't really done anything too deep (in training) but I think after a few days, when I've opened the lungs up, hopefully I'll start to feel better." Andre Greipel (Lotto-Belisol) won the race that finished in a bunch sprint.
