Tour de Wallonie, Stage 5: Mishap Hinders Lodewyck In The Sprint

25. July 2012

Klaas Lodewycks' plans to improve on a third-place finish at the Tour de Wallonie were thrown off track Wednesday when another rider's wheel hit his in the sprint on the final stage.

Lodewyck Finishes 10th
Lodewyck said he had no problem getting in position for the downhill dash to the line at the end of the 179.2-kilometer race. But then trouble struck. "I felt strong, but the moment I wanted to make a move something blocked my derailleur," Lodewyck said. "I think someone hit my back wheel and my chain went off. So I lost 20 meters in the corner and then it was done." Lodewyck still managed to finish 10th while Gianni Meersman (Lotto-Belisol Team) started celebrating too soon and was pipped at the line by Danilo Napolitano (Acqua & Sapone). The gaffe allowed Giacomo Nizzolo (RadioShack-Nissan) to take the overall win by one second. Yannick Eijssen (28th place) and Steve Morabito (29th) were the BMC Racing Team's top overall finishers (both 16 seconds back).
