Tour de Suisse, Stage 6: Frank Fights Back

16. June 2011

Triesenberg/Malbun, Liechtenstein

BMC Racing Team's Mathias Frank impressively fought back from a crash Thursday to finish seventh on the day at the Tour de Suisse and climb back into the top 10 in the overall standings.

Frank Now Eighth Overall
Frank and nearly the entirety of the BMC Racing Team went down in a crash with 25 kilometers to go in the 157 km race on the first of two days of mountain-top finishes. But with the team's help, he caught the leaders at the base of the final climb, then matched the competition until the final three kilometers. "It was impressive. Mathias pretty much saved the day," BMC Racing Team Assistant Director Michael Sayers said. "It's really unfortunate he crashed because he probably would have been on the podium had that not happend." Frank improved from 12th to eighth overall as Damiano Cunego (Lampre-ISD) finished third to retain the overall lead. Steven Kruijswijk (Rabobank) soloed to win the stage.

Frank: 'I Stayed Calm'
"The crash happened in a silly moment, I don`t know exactly how it happened," Frank said. "We were fast and the peloton rode active. I have only some scrapes. Johann (Tschopp) and I got back on our BMCs first and George (Hincapie) also helped me a lot to get back. I stayed calm and rode my rhythm. Before the crash I had good legs and thought that this would be my day. Who knows what would have happened without the crash. My aim is still top 10."
