Tour de Pologne, Stage 5: Santambrogio, Ballan Shine

5. August 2010

Ustron, Poland

Mauro Santambrogio finished fourth and Alessandro Ballan was 10th on Thursday to put both BMC Racing Team riders within striking distance of the overall lead with two stages remaining at the Tour de Pologne.

Last Climb Tough
The mountainous, 149-kilometer race through intermittent rain included five trips up a circuit climb before a forested uphill climb to the finish. Dan Martin (Garmin-Transitions) attacked inside 4 km and soloed to the win and the overall lead while Santambrogio and Ballan finished in a group of nine, 20 seconds back. "The last climb was much harder for me," Ballan said. "I had good legs, but the climb was hard. Everyone was going full gas to the finish."

Queen Stage Friday
Ballan remains third overall, 21 seconds off the lead, while Santambrogio climbed to ninth, at 30 seconds. Friday's "Queen" stage includes seven climbs in 228 km, including an ascent to the resort area of Terma Bukowina Tatrzańska. "Tomorrow is longer and I think it's a good one for me," Ballan said. "But Martin has a good team, too. If Mauro and I are feeling good, it's possible we can change the general classification."
