Santos Tour Down Under, Stage 5: Animating The Race

26. January 2013

BMC Racing Team's Klaas Lodewyck made Stage 5's long breakaway and Ivan Santaromita animated the race on the final trip up Old Willunga Hill Saturday at the Santos Tour Down Under.

Two Times Up The Climb
A day after finishing 10th, Lodewyck joined six others in going clear after 25 kilometers of the 151.5 km race. They eventually led by four-and-a-half minutes before being pulled back at the start of the first of two ascents of Old Willunga Hill. "It was really good day for the entire team," BMC Racing Team Assistant Director Fabio Baldato said. "They were really motivated to put pressure on the other teams, first with Martin Kohler in the breakaway and then Klaas in the longer one." Then it was Santaromita's turn to be noticed with a move the last time up the 3 km finishing climb. "I attacked immediately at the bottom but it was a headwind, so it was difficult to make a difference," Santaromita said after finishing 13th. "I'm very happy with my form. I have good shape and I'm excited for my next races in Europe – Trofeo Laigueglia and Lugano, which is a home race for me and my next objective of the season." Simon Gerrans (Orica-GreenEDGE) won the stage ahead of Tom-Jelte Slagter (Blanco Pro Cycling Team), who took the overall lead with a day to go.
