Ronde van België, Stage 3: Two In Top 10 Overall

24. May 2013

BMC Racing Team's Philippe Gilbert and Manuel Quinziato are sixth and seventh overall, respectively, following Friday's individual time trial in rainy conditions at Ronde van België.

Weekend Stages Suit Gilbert
Gilbert had been fifth heading into the 15-kilometer race against the clock. The world road champion placed 12th and conceded 67 seconds to stage winner Tony Martin, who won in a time of 17:42 to become the new race leader. "Today's time trial was hard because of the rain and I didn't want to take too many risks in the turns," Gilbert said. "Losing one minute to the world time trial champion is not bad." Gilbert is 64 seconds off the overall lead while Quinziato finished 14th and is a further seven seconds behind his teammate. BMC Racing Team Assistant Director Yvon Ledanois said Gilbert's deficit might seem too difficult to make up, but the final two stages suit the 2011 winner of this race. "One minute is a lot, but for me, it's less because Saturday and Sunday provide a good opportunity for him," Ledanois said. Saturday's undulating, 156.3-km race includes an uphill finish while Sunday's 177-km stage also finishes going uphill after traversing eight distinctive climbs, including several more than once.
