País Vasco, Stage 3: Challenging Finish

3. April 2013

Tejay van Garderen was the BMC Racing Team's best finisher on Wednesday's summit finish at Vuelta al País Vasco.

Steep Climb
Van Garderen finished 23rd, 33 seconds after stage winner Sergio Henao (Sky Procycling) edged Carlos Betancur (Ag2r-La Mondiale) at the top of a 450-meter climb up a 21-percent gradient. "On that steep of a climb, it takes a special kind of rider," van Garderen said. "I said when I came here that this wasn't a target, but I wasn't going to not go for the GC (general classification). We'll take it day-by-day. Tomorrow is another hard summit finish. I think it's more of my style, more regular. So we'll just keep fighting." Van Garderen slipped from 10th to 19th overall while Henao climbed into the overall lead. BMC Racing Team Assistant Director Yvon Ledanois said it was good to see teammates Philippe Gilbert, Amaël Moinard and Dominik Nerz help van Garderen get near the front at the base of the final 7.5 km climb. "Good position was important because it was so steep at the beginning," Ledanois said.
