Cadel Evans Wins Tirreno-Adriatico

15. March 2011

San Benedetto del Tronto, Italy

An emotional Cadel Evans hoisted the trident trophy for the BMC Racing Team Tuesday, the spoils of his overall victory at Tirreno-Adriatico, the "race of the two seas."

Received Good Support
Evans powered his BMC TT01 timemachine down the 9.3-kilometer course fast enough to win the seven-day race by 11 seconds over Robert Gesink (Rabobank). "I'm extremely pleased that I rode so well today and throughout the entire race," Evans said. "I worked very hard this winter, training alone for hours. I'm grateful to the riders and staff of the BMC Racing Team who supported and helped me to have such a strong race. Of course my focus remains on the Tour de France, but I always prefer to have some results beforehand." The win was Evans' first at a stage race since the 2008 edition of Settimana Coppi e Bartali.

'Strong and Confident'
BMC Racing Team Assistant Director Fabio Baldato said there was concern when Gesink put in an impressive time. "Cadel had to fight all the way to the end today," Baldato said. "But when I saw that he was going so hard in the second half, I knew he could win. Cadel was very strong and confident and the team was fantastic helping him throughout the race." Fabian Cancellara (Team Leopard Trek) won the stage.
