Behind The Scenes With The BMC Racing Team: Performance Testing

17. January 2011

Denia, Spain

Testing and evaluating the riders' level of fitness is an integral part of the BMC Racing Team's pre-season training camp.

Lactate vs. Power Curve
Under the supervision of Chief Medical Officer Dr. Max Testa, the 21 riders at the BMC Racing Team's camp in Denia, Spain, are periodically undergoing special sessions to have their lactate concentration measured, along with their heart rate, power output and rate of perceived exertion. "This lactate testing profile assesses the riders' level of fitness and individual training zones," Testa said. "We're doing lactate versus a power curve." The team's physicians assistant, Carrie Needham, is helping Testa oversee the testing while also analyzing the results.

The Value of SRM
An SRM power meter on each BMC is a key component in each riders' daily training, said BMC Racing Team Performance Advisor Scott Nydam. "We're relying on these lactate threshold tests to indicate their breaking points, as far as lactate production and the power they can sustain in training. Once they start racing, we'll be able to use the SRM power files from the races with equal or even more data."
