Volta a Catalunya, Stage 6: Wyss Fifth Again

23. marzo 2013

A concerted effort by the BMC Racing Team delivered Danilo Wyss to a fifth place finish Saturday, his fourth top 10 result at this year's Volta a Catalunya.

Big Help From Cummings
BMC Racing Team's Steve Cummings single-handedly strung the entire peloton into a thin line up the final categorized climb, then teammates Martin Kohler, Steve Morabito and Ivan Santaromita closed the gap to a nine-man breakaway on the run-in to the finish. Wyss said he was grateful for Cummings's help to first regain the field after the climb and then for the strong lead from the team out on a technical run into the finish of the 178.7 km stage. "The map wasn't clear about the last street – I thought it was going to be much long shorter," he said. "The last kilometer was really long and I was almost ready to launch my sprint on the last left-hand corner and that was way too far. Yesterday I was a bit late and today I was a bit too early." Simon Gerrans (Orica-GreenEDGE) came off of Wyss's wheel to take the win while Daniel Martin (Garmin-Sharp) kept the overall lead with a day to go. BMC Racing Team Assistant Director Max Sciandri said Morabito will be looking to improve his 13th place overall in the 122 km race that includes eight laps of a circuit with a difficult climb. "Tomorrow will be all out for everybody," Sciandri said.
