Volta a Catalunya, Stage 5: Difficult Day

23. marzo 2012

Steve Morabito of the BMC Racing Team lost contact with the leading group on the final climb Friday and slipped out of overall contention with two days to go at the Volta a Catalunya.

Frank In The Break
Morabito said he did not have the power to stay with the leading group as it ramped up the pace to catch a six-man breakaway that included teammate Mathias Frank. "The climb was about one kilometer too long," Morabito said. "I tried to close the gaps but it just wasn't possible. The team put me in good position at the bottom of the climb but I was missing something. Right now I don't have my climbing legs. It's only my second race." Julien Simon (Saur Sojasun) won the stage while Morabito arrived nearly five minutes later to drop from second to 28th overall. Michael Albasini (GreenEDGE Cycling Team) remained the race leader while Frank (23rd, 3:41 behind) is the BMC Racing Team's best-placed rider overall. Frank said he was feeling good. "I saw the breakaway going and knew we needed someone with it," he said. "The first 90 kilometers (of 207) were really fast because everyone was attacking."
