Tour of Belgium A Success For BMC Racing Team

29. maggio 2011

Putte, Belgium

Greg Van Avermaet finished second overall and Marcus Burghardt took the sprint jersey from the shoulders of his teammate Michael Schär on Sunday's final stage to cap a successful Tour of Belgium for the BMC Racing Team.

Terrific Teamwork

Van Avermaet finished 21 seconds behind winner Philippe Gilbert (Omega Pharma-Lotto) as Gilbert's teammate, André Greipel, won the final stage. BMC Racing Team Directeur Sportif John Lelangue said good teamwork achieved the result. "We were working the whole week for this," he said. "When you are beaten by a guy the quality of Gilbert, I think we can be really, really happy." Said Van Avermaet: "I am happy I could hold the No. 2 spot. There was a lot of wind today. But because of all the good work and teamwork, we can look back on a nice Tour of Belgium."

Burghardt In The Break
Schär earned the sprints jersey on the penultimate stage, but Burghardt took advantage of his time in a breakaway Sunday to score enough points to win it himself. "It was an honor to wear the jersey for one day and Marcus was in so many breaks himself this week, he deserves it," Schär said. Burghardt said the good form he is enjoying makes him confident for the upcoming Tour de Suisse. "I have never been in such a good condition after the break between the classics," he said. "I think the training of Dr. Max Testa suits me really well. All the staff did a great job here, too."
