Tour of Austria, Stage 2: Santambrogio Second

4. luglio 2011

Kitzbüheler Horn, Austria

On the slopes of Austria's steepest mountain, BMC Racing Team's Mauro Santambrogio registered his third runner-up finish in the past two weeks Monday to climb into second overall at the Tour of Austria.

Credits Teamwork

Santambrogio, second at both the Italian national road championship (June 25) and the Giro di Toscana (June 19), couldn't catch Fredrik Kessiakoff (Astana), who soloed to the win and the overall lead at the Kitzbüheler Horn ski station. Arriving 78 seconds later on the 158-kilometer stage, Santambrogio immediately credited his teammates. "They did a very good job for me, getting me in good position for the climb," Santambrogio said. "I'm sorry I didn't get the win. Tomorrow is a new day. Today it was just not possible to catch him (Kessiakoff)."

Butler Also Top 10
BMC Racing Team's Greg Van Avermaet held onto his King of the Mountains jersey for another day, but will be put into service to help teammates Santambrogio and Chris Butler, who rode to a season-best, sixth place finish and into seventh overall. "The team worked well today – particularly Martin (Kohler) and Taylor (Phinney)," BMC Racing Team Assistant Director Michael Sayers said. "I think maybe Butler did the fastest climb if you look at where he started and where he finished. Tomorrow we'll depend on Greg to help those guys organize. He's a good leader in the mountains."
