Tour de Romandie, Stage 1: Tejay van Garderen Fourth

25. aprile 2012

After BMC Racing Team's Martin Kohler figured in the day's breakaway at the Tour de Romandie, teammate Tejay van Garderen sprinted to fourth place in the bunch sprint that saw Cadel Evans (13th) and Steve Morabito (15th) also place in the top 15 Wednesday.

Kohler's Breakaway
Van Garderen's finish moved him into 15th overall, 15 seconds behind new leader Bradley Wiggins (Sky Pro Cycling), who won the stage after a flurry of attacks were launched in the final 20 kilometers of the 184.5 km race. The aggressiveness of the peloton spoiled Kohler's plan after he joined Kenny Dehaes (Lotto-Belisol), Angelo Tulik (Europcar) and Jimmy Engoulvent (Saur-Sojasun) in a breakaway that was only given five minutes of freedom. "I wanted to go for the King of the Mountains jersey, but they were really racing and after 130 km in the break I didn't have the legs to stay in the front," Kohler said. BMC Racing Team Assistant Director Rik Verbrugghe said van Garderen's performance was equally as impressive. "Tejay was really strong today and he also kept Cadel out of trouble, so everything was good today," he said.
