Santa Rosa, California

Tour de France and Giro d'Italia stage winner Rik Verbrugghe has been hired by the BMC Racing Team to serve as an assistant director for the 2011 season.

A Bright Future

Verbrugghe raced 13 seasons, winning Flèche Wallonne and Criterium International, before retiring in 2008. The former Belgian national time trial champion said he is excited to get in on the ground floor of a program that is rising rapidly. "The BMC Racing Team has a bright future with both young and experienced riders," Verbrugghe said. "They also have a modern program, which is very important. It's going to be a very productive team in the future."

Good Experience
President Jim Ochowicz said he was eager to bring Verbrugghe into the BMC Racing Team family. "He is someone who is fresh off the racing scene, but who also has experience in the field directing a ProTour-level team," Ochowicz said. "The combination of the two bodes well for our program and what we're trying to build moving forward."

Common View
Verbrugghe will fit well with the team's other assistant directors – Fabio Baldato and Michael Sayers – who also have a riders' mentality, BMC Racing Team Directeur Sportif John Lelangue said. "Even if he only has two years of experience as a director, Rik has a good vision of all the races," Lelangue said. "In talking to him at the events where we have both been, we have always shared the same view of the races." Lelangue said Verbrugghe will direct many of the one-week stage races in the early season while Baldato will concentrate on the Giro d'Italia and Sayers on the U.S. races and the Amgen Tour of California.
