Kristoff's Victory In Norway Leads BMC Racing Team

26. giugno 2011

Oslo, Norway

Alexander Kristoff's gold medal performance at the Norwegian road championships was one of three medals won by BMC Racing Team riders Sunday in national championship competition. BMC Racing Team riders Steve Morabito and Martin Kohler also earned silver and bronze medals, respectively, at the Swiss national road championships.

'I Was Strong Today'

Kristoff was part of an early break of nearly two dozen riders that gained a seven-minute lead in the 195.6-kilometer race. "They attacked me a lot to get rid of me, but I managed to hold on," Kristoff said. "I'm really happy. Fortunately I was strong today." At the finish, it was down to just Kristoff and Vegard Stake Laengen (Joker-Merida). World road champion Thor Hushovd finished third. This is Kristoff's second national road title, adding to the one he won in 2007 when he beat Hushovd in a three-up sprint. "This is better because everyone knows who I am," he said. "In 2007, I was a really young rider and they didn't really pay much attention to me, so it was a bit easier. Now, everyone knows how good I can be so they were working hard to get rid of me."

Morabito Second, Kohler Third
The Swiss national road championship also came down to a two-up sprint after Morabito and winner Fabian Cancellara (LEOPARD TREK) distanced themselves from the pack with 20 km left in the 193 km race. "Twice on the last climb, I tried to attack him," Morabito said, "but I just couldn't drop him. It would have been nice to have won the jersey and worn it in the Tour de France, but this is still good for my morale." Kohler's third place added to the championship he won Thursday in the individual time trial. In that event, teammate Mathias Frank was third, giving the BMC Racing Team six medals in four days.
