Giro d'Italia, Stage 11: Wyss Ninth

16. maggio 2012

BMC Racing Team's Danilo Wyss scored his second top 10 finish of the season Wednesday with ninth place in the sprint that capped the longest stage of the Giro d'Italia.

Avoided A Crash
After BMC Racing Team former world road champion Alessandro Ballan made a solo bid for victory with an attack in the final two kilometers of the 255 km race, Wyss managed to avoid a crash in the final corner as Roberto Ferrari (Androni Giacattoli-Venezuela) took the stage win. Wyss said he wished the final Cat. 4 climb 12 kilometers from the finish had been longer so some of the sprinters who were dropped, like world road champion Mark Cavendish, wouldn't have been able to chase back. "I'm happy though, because it's my first top 10 in this Giro and my condition is good," he said. "Unfortunately, I don't think there are many more sprints, so now I'll try to go in the breakaways to get a result." Joaquim Rodriguez (Team Katusha) kept the overall lead while Johann Tschopp (18th, 2:02 behind) remains the BMC Racing Team's best-placed rider overall. Thursday's 155 km stage ends with a downhill run after four categorized climbs.
