BMC Racing Team fought until the end for the pink jersey of Giro d'Italia

9. maggio 2012

The BMC Racing Team fought to defend the pink jersey for the first stage in Italy of this year’s edition of Giro d’Italia in a team team trial of 33.2 kilometers in Verona.

Thankful To His Teammates
The BMC Racing Team was the last of the 22 teams to start the time trial Wednesday. Before the departure, Taylor Phinney - the pink jersey’s holder at that moment- knew it would be hard to keep the race lead considering the misfortune he had in stage 3, with a crash in the last 200meters that cost him 3 stiches at the right ankle. Eventually, BMC Racing Team finished in 10th position, 31 seconds behind stage winner Garmin Barracuda Team which includes new race leader Ramunas Navardauskas. Right after he crossed the finish line, Phinney thanked all his team mates for their help “I gave the maximum I had, but I had nothing to give, I am so thankful to my team mates because without their great help and strong support I’m not even sure I could have done it to the finish and I look forward to pay them back during he rest of the Giro”, Phinney said.

Strong Performance Anyway
BMC Racing Team’s Assistant Sport Director Fabio Baldato said the team did a great job despite a trajectory mistake at a point during the second part of the trial “One of our guys went too fast in a curve while he was taking the relay and he cut straight in the grass, which has slow down the pace and then they had a good reaction to wait each other and then, they made the fastest time in the third part of the trial” Baldato said.  Marco Pinotti, said he was impressed by the outcome of the day “In the end, we only lost 31 seconds, that’s great considering the bad condition of Taylor with his injury, I think with a good Phinney, we could have won today. The team is in strong condition so I’m confident for the rest of the race” said Pinotti.
