Amgen Tour: Pre-Race Press Conference

11. maggio 2013

World road champion Philippe Gilbert and Tejay van Garderen represented the BMC Racing Team at the Amgen Tour of California pre-race press conference Friday.

Gilbert's First American Race
Gilbert said he has been training hard since his last race, Liège-Bastogne-Liège, on April 21. "I hope to be out there for a stage win and to help Tejay to make a good result in the general classification," Gilbert said. "This is the first time for me (racing in America) so this will be exciting to see. I've seen this race on the internet in the past and always see a lot of fans, very excited, running next to the riders on the climbs. It looks very funny." Van Garderen, fourth at this race last year and best young rider at the Tour de France, said with a new south-to-north route and some of the race's recent winners not present, it is a wide-open race. "We've got a really strong team here with guys who can be successful on any sort of terrain," he said. "Maybe I'm considered one of the favorites, but it's bike racing – there are always surprises. You look to last year and nobody was really looking to Robert Gesink as one of the favorites and he ended up winning."
