Amgen Tour of California: Burghardt injured

22. maggio 2010

Big Bear Lake, California

Marcus Burghardt of the BMC Racing Team has withdrawn from the Amgen Tour of California due to an injury suffered in a crash in the feed zone of Stage 6 Friday. Burghardt and teammate Chris Butler went down, with the German injuring his right elbow.

Possible little fracture

"Already in the race, I felt that I couldn't bend it," Burghardt said. "I couldn't pull on the bars." After finishing the 217 km race from Palmdale to Big Bear Lake, he was taken to a local hospital. "It's possible he has a little fracture of the radius," said Dr. Max Testa, BMC Racing Team physician. "We need to repeat the X-ray in a couple days to see. But if it is a fracture, it is a small fracture – most likely in an area that doesn't require anything but rest."

Further examination
Burghardt will fly today to Salt Lake City, where he will undergo additional examination, Testa said.  "For sure, it's not the perfect moment to have a possible break because my form is going well," Burghardt said. "But I hope that I can race in two weeks at Gippingen and for sure at the Tour de Suisse."
