It was on a beautiful late summer’s day that Table Mountain national park, in the Tokai forest in Cape Town, played host to the prologue of THE staged mountain bike race, the famous ABSA Cape Epic 2011. This race takes place over 8 days (prologue and 7 consecutive stages), covering 707 km and 14,550 m of ascents. 1,200 sportspeople from various categories participate in it, and the impressive organization of this little world is evident throughout the week.

Under a blazing sun and 32 degree heat, on a particularly technical and dusty course, the BMC Mountain Bike Racing Team made a fantastic entrance. At the prologue, broadcast live and in full on the “Super Sports” TV channel, Alex Moos and Balz Weber finished the 27 km loop in 1 hour, 7 minutes and 15 seconds, which puts them in 9th place in the general intermediate ranking, led by the top brass of worldwide mountain biking. The best time was achieved by another Swiss, Christophe Sauser, in 1 hour, 2 minutes and 40 seconds, with his team-mate Burry Stander, the South African champion.

The first stage will take place tomorrow in Tulbagh, in a continuous loop, over a distance of 89 km and 2,050 m of ascents and descents. The first starts will be at 07:00 (06:00 in Switzerland).
