Vuelta al Pais Vasco, Stage 1: Steep Climb

4. April 2011

Zumarraga, Spain

The short, but extremely steep, final climb of Monday's opening stage of Vuelta al Pais Vasco split the pack and left the BMC Racing Team chasing on the short descent to the finish.

Eye On Stage Wins

Ivan Santaromita was the team's top finisher (42nd) on the day, conceding 54 seconds to Joaquim Rodriguez (Katusha), who won a four-up sprint. Amaël Moinard (87th, 9:19 behind) said he might have been faster on the 22 percent grade if he had run his BMC. "The last climb was so hard," Moinard said. "I felt good, but not so good to follow the leaders. So I preferred to lose time and finish easy to try for a stage in the next days."
