Volta a Catalunya, Stage 4: Morabito Second Overall

22. March 2012

BMC Racing Team's Steve Morabito climbed from fourth to second overall Thursday at the Volta a Catalunya by relying on strong teamwork to finish with the lead group on the 199-kilometer stage.

Closed The Gap
Morabito received help from teammates Mathias Frank and Mauro Santambrogio, first on a climb on the finishing circuit and later to catch a dangerous group of six who had broken away in the final 20 kilometers. "Everyone was working well to close the gap, especially Mathias," Morabito said. "We only caught them in the last kilometer. I gave it everything in the last kilometer to catch them and then tried to do the sprint, but I came up a little bit short." Rigoberto Urán (Sky Pro Cycling) won the stage while Stage 1 and 2 winner Michael Albasini (GreenEDGE Cycling Team) kept the overall lead, 1:32 ahead of Morabito.

Hard Day Ahead
BMC Racing Team Assistant Director Rik Verbrugghe said Friday's 207 km stage, second-longest of the race and featuring another mountainous profile, will further shake out the general classification. Currently, 16 riders besides Morabito remain tied on time, 1:32 behind Albasini. "I saw a really, really strong team today and that's important," Verbrugghe said. "Friday will be a very hard and important stage. Steve will need to do exactly the same as he did today and fight hard on the climbs."
