Volta a Catalunya, Stage 1: Evans Eighth

21. March 2011

Lloret de Mar, Spain

Former world champion Cadel Evans didn't concede any time to his rivals Monday in finishing eighth for the BMC Racing Team on the opening stage of the Volta a Catalunya.

Solo Breakaway Winner

Gatis Smukulis (HTC-High Road) soloed to the win after being part of an early four-man breakaway. Evans rolled in 28 seconds later after receiving good support from teammates Brent Bookwalter, Mathias Frank and Karsten Kroon in the final kilometers, BMC Racing Team Directeur Sportif John Lelangue said. "The objective today wasn't the stage, but for positioning and keeping Cadel out of trouble before the big mountain stage (Wednesday)," he said.
