Van Garderen Fourth In Time Trial

19. February 2012

Portimão, Portugal

Tejay van Garderen finished fourth in the final time trial Sunday at the Volta ao Algarve to place seventh overall for the BMC Racing Team.

Good Sensations

Van Garderen said he "messed up" a few corners in his race against the clock on a tricky, 25.8-kilometer course, but was satisfied to only finish 14 seconds back of the winning time of Bradley Wiggins (Sky Pro Cycling). "I had good sensations but definitely don't think it was a perfect performance," van Garderen said. "But to be close to guys like Wiggins and Tony Martin (second, in the same time as Wiggins) shows that I'm on a good level." Van Garderen, second overall at this race last year, said the strong finish made up for some disappointment of losing time on Stage 3's uphill finish. "I had a bit of a hunger flat that day," he said. "It was a mistake but sometimes your body responds differently to things in the first race of the year. I'll be sure not to do that at Paris-Nice."  Richie Porte (Sky Pro Cycling) won the race overall.
