Tour of Beijing, Stage 1: Lodewyck 10th

9. October 2012

BMC Racing Team's Klaas Lodwyck finished 10th in an extraordinarily fast field sprint to the finish on Monday's opening stage of the Tour of Beijing.

'Too Late To React'
Aided by a strong tailwind blowing down the finishing straight, speeds reached more than 65 kilometers per hour as the 117 km race that started in Tian An Men Square reached its conclusion within sight of the Bird’s Nest Olympic Stadium. Lodewyck said he was feeling good as he came out of the final corner. "I was on the wheel of Theo Bos and he was on the wheel of Greg Henderson," he said. "So I was thinking maybe this would be my big chance. But they waited too long with the tailwind. So when I really wanted to start my sprint, other guys were already coming up from my left. With the speed they had, it was too late to react." Elia Viviani (Liquigas-Cannondale) took the win ahead of Andrew Fenn (Omega Pharma-Quick Step) and Edvald Boasson Hagen (Sky Procycling) to earn the first leader's jersey. BMC Racing Team Assistant Director Max Sciandri credited Taylor Phinney – who launched the first attack of the race – and Danilo Wyss for helping with the leadout. "With the speeds at the finish, and there being no crashes, it was a good day for us," Sciandri said.
