Santa Rosa, California

BMC Racing Team Assistant Director Michael Sayers has been selected to direct the United States men's professional team at the UCI Road World Championships Oct. 3 in Geelong, Australia.

Past Worlds Participant

Sayers retired in 2008 after a dozen years as a professional that included a stage win at the Herald Sun Tour in Australia and several appearances on the U.S. team at the world road championships. The past two seasons he has gained valuable experience directing races in Europe and the United States, BMC Racing Team Directeur Sportif John Lelangue said. Sayers is currently directing the team at the Larry H. Miller Tour of Utah, where three riders placed in the top 10 in the prologue Tuesday.

Meets A Goal
Directing the U.S. worlds team fulfills a career goal, Sayers said. "When I rode in the words in 2002 in Zolder, you could tell the Italians were really doing it the right way," he said. "I think American cycling is moving in the right direction and USA Cycling is showing a continued commitment to excellence. I'm proud to have been selected to be a part of this team." Rider selections for the race will be announced by USA Cycling Sept. 17.
