Santambrogio, Van Avermaet Top 10 At Gran Piemonte

27. September 2012

BMC Racing Team's Mauro Santambrogio and Greg Van Avermaet finished sixth and seventh, respectively, Thursday at the one-day, Italian semi-classic Gran Piemonte.

Chase Nearly Led To Crash
Santambrogio was close to chasing down a group of three who had escaped on the final climb of the 188-kilometer race. But rounding a corner in the final kilometer, he nearly crashed. "I was close to coming back to them, but on the corner I was going too fast and clipped my pedal," Santambrogio said. "It's too bad because I was only about 30 meters behind them, going full gas, when it happened." Rigoberto Urán (Sky Procycling) took the win ahead of Luca Paolini (Katusha Team) while Santambrogio's sixth place matched his best result of the season. BMC Racing Team Assistant Director Fabio Baldato said the results bode well for Saturday's edition of Il Lombardia, the final one-day race on the WorldTour calendar. "Four or five of our guys were able to stay with the best riders on the climbs today," he said. "We decided to stay quiet and just follow wheels today to mostly save energy for Lombardia."
