Santambrogio Fifth At Lugano

26. February 2012

Lugano, Switzerland

Moments after sprinting to fifth place at GP di Lugano, Mauro Santambrogio was involved in an unusual crash 20 meters after the finish line. Fortunately, the BMC Racing Team rider was not seriously hurt.

Bit Of Bad Luck

Santambrogio said his front wheel caught in a rut in the road near the edge of the crowd barriers, summersaulting him onto the pavement. "My race was good, but the finish was not so good," Santambrogio said. The Italian suffered a bit of road rash, but was otherwise unhurt. Eros Capecchi (Liquigas-Cannondale) soloed to the win. BMC Racing Team Assistant Director Rik Verbrugghe said it was good to see Santambrogio make the front group in the 178.5-kilometer race that included five circuits of a 35.7 km loop. "It was a really fast pace up the last climb," Verbrugghe said.
