Oss Third On Haut Var's Final Day; Hushovd Fifth Overall

17. February 2013

BMC Racing Team's Daniel Oss finished third and teammate Thor Hushovd won the bunch sprint for sixth place, but it was not enough to keep Hushovd in the overall lead Sunday on the last day of the Tour du Haut Var.

BMC Racing Team Well Represented
Oss was one of the remaining riders from what started as a breakaway of more than two dozen (that also included BMC Racing Team's Martin Kohler and Amaël Moinard) not long after the 207-kilometer race began. As the riders in the break began to dwindle and its maximum lead of four minutes began to shrink, Oss said it was tough knowing what was happening behind. "It was also difficult to talk with the directors and my teammates," he said. "Some guys in the breakaway wanted to make it to the finish and some did not. It was hard all day and some were pushing harder than others. But during the race, the selection was happening naturally."

Hushovd's Group 14 Seconds Behind
BMC Racing Team Assistant Director Fabio Baldato said with the gap less than a minute inside the final 10 kilometers, he told Oss to follow the leaders and Mathias Frank and Manuel Quinziato to drive the chase behind for Hushovd. But the break was not caught and Oss could not outsprint stage winner Lars Boom (Blanco Pro Cycling Team) and overall winner Arthur Vichot (FDJ), who had bridged up to the breakaway on the last climb. "I felt a bit tired all day in the breakaway but I'm really happy with my condition and proud of the team," Oss said. Hushovd's group arrived 14 seconds later, which slid him to fifth in the final standings. "Of course I'm disappointed not to win the race overall, but my stage win Saturday and how I felt today is a big boost to my confidence," Hushovd said.
