Giro d'Italia, Stage 9: Frank Shines In Breakaway

15. May 2011

Mount Etna, Italy

BMC Racing Team's Mathias Frank figured prominently in a nine-man breakaway Sunday that ultimately shattered on the final climb up the slopes of Mount Etna.

Tschopp Best Finisher

On the first of two ascents of Europe's most active volcano, Frank was narrowly outsprinted at the summit by Filippo Savini (Colnago-CSF Inox). "Mathias showed great motivation and power today," BMC Racing Team Assistant Director Fabio Baldato said. "And Johann Tschopp did a great job to hang with the GC favorites as long as possible." Tschopp finished 27th, 2:21 behind stage winner Alberto Contador (Saxo Bank-Sungard), who took the overall lead. Tschopp is best-placed for the BMC Racing Team in 24th overall, 4:23 behind.
