Gilbert Fourth On Final Stage Of Tour Of Belgium

27. May 2012

BMC Racing Team's Philippe Gilbert rode to a fourth place Sunday on the final stage of the Tour of Belgium to finish the race seventh overall.

Quinziato Also Top 10
BMC Racing Team Directeur Sportif John Lelangue said he was pleased to see the squad take an aggressive approach to the 208.7-kilometer stage that ended with a step climb. First, Martin Kohler and Michael Schär were in a nine-man breakaway. After it was caught inside of 45 km to go, Amaël Moinard powered another escape until the final kilometers. "Our objective was to break the peloton and make the leader's teams work," Lelangue said. "Moinard did a good job entering the breaks and we also tried two times with Phil. We did a lot of offensive teamwork during the whole day so I am happy." Gilbert tried his last attack with 400 meters to go. "It was a bit late for me, but I tried to make the sprint," he said. "As for my condition, I'm quite satisfied with what I saw." Carlos Betancur Gomez (Acqua & Sapone) won the final stage while Tony Martin (Omega Pharma-Quick Step) kept the lead he had from Saturday's time trial to win the race overall. BMC Racing Team's other top 10 finisher in the final general classification was Manuel Quinziato in ninth.
