Cadel Evans Eighth At Giro d'Italia

1. June 2014

BMC Racing Team's Cadel Evans finished eighth overall Sunday at the Giro d'Italia after teammate Daniel Oss made a bid for the stage win in the last kilometers of the three-week race.

Evans: I Gave It My Best
Oss charged out of the peloton after the final climb on the circuit in Trieste but was reeled in with a kilometer to go of the 172-km race as Luka Mezgec (Team Giant-Shimano) took the stage win. Nairo Quintana (Movistar Team) won the overall, 12:00 ahead of Evans and by 2:58 over runner-up Rigoberto Uran (Omega Pharma-Quick Step) and 4:04 over third-placed Fabio Aru (Astana Pro Team). Evans said while his performance fell short of his expectations, he was grateful for the support he received. "In the end, we rode exceptionally well as a team," he said. "I lacked it in the mountains against my competitors, but that is something to reflect on in the near future. Most of all, I gave it my best, so I am not going to have any regrets." Evans took the overall lead on Stage 8 and held it until Uran won the individual time trial on Stage 12. Evans has finished in the top 10 in 11 of 16 grand tours he has completed (of 17 started), with a victory in the 2011 Tour de France. Three of his top 10 finishes at grand tours have come at the Giro: eighth this year, third in 2013 and 5th in 2010.
