Amgen Tour of California, Stage 2: Rain-Soaked Race

18. May 2010

Santa Rosa, California

Steve Morabito finished in the lead group Monday on Stage 2 of the Amgen Tour of California to keep his general classification hopes alive after a treacherous 177-kilometer race into the BMC Racing Team's hometown of Santa Rosa.

Bone-Chilling Rain

Morabito was among a select group riders who topped the last climb of Trinity Grade in the lead. "There were no attacks or accelerations but every corner of the switchback climb we would drop a few more guys," he said. Helped by teammates Marcus Burghardt and Simon Zahner, U.S. national champion George Hincapie chased hard on the technical descent to finish 1:17 back. "I didn't feel good at all on the climbs," Hincapie said. "That's probably normal after crashing at 60 kph. Hopefully I'll feel better as the race goes on."
