After a three-man breakaway was reeled in with less than 15 kilometers to go, the BMC Racing Team massed near the front to set up Van Avermaet. "Greg was not really in a good position but (Manuel) Quinziator tried to put him in a good spot," Assistant Director Rik Verbrugghe said. "In the end, Greg is not really a pure sprinter like the finish was for today, so this was a good result for him." Juan Jose Haedo (Saxo Bank Sungard) won the stage after the first few riders in the sprint went the wrong direction in the final 500 meters. Juan José Cobo (Geox-TMC) retained the overall lead. "I hope tomorrow the guys go in the break and that we see something good for the last couple days," Verbrugghe said.
