Two Weekends, Two World Records: Absalon’s 5th European Cross-country Championship title

8. June 2014

St. Wendel, Germany - Cross-Country European Championships

Julien Absalon successfully defended his European Championship title in St. Wendel (Germany) over the weekend.
It is his fourth major victory this year and the fifth time he won a European Championship in the cross country event. In the same race, after winning silver in the XC Eliminator on the Friday, Ralph Näf also showed a strong race and was rewarded with a 6th place. Martin Fanger came 10th.

It was scorching hot out in the fields around St. Wendel and the air in the forest was heavy. Absalon, however, was not at all distracted by the extreme weather conditions. He launched an attack in the third lap to reduce the lead group on what was considered a fast course. Fabian Giger hung onto his wheel and the duel that started at Albstadt a week ago began again. In the following laps Absalon repeatedly attacked, but Giger was determined not to get dropped.

"I fought a very, very hard battle against Fabian, but we also worked together really well" said Absalon. With the last lap in sight the 33-year-old put the hammer down once more when climbing up a steep section. This time Giger conceded, opening the way for Absalon to win his third European Championship title in the elite category. It was also a record setting win as he now owns five blue European Championship jerseys.

"After Albstadt I was able to keep the momentum going. I wanted to win this so I could keep the blue jersey", said Absalon, who won his first European Champion title in St. Wendel back in 2001.

Ralph Naef was able to win silver in the Eliminator competition on Friday. "I'm happy to prove that my Eliminator World Champion title a couple of years ago was not just luck. In Sunday's cross country race he came sixth and was more than happy about that as well: „All in all it was a very good weekend for me."
