Showdown for Overall World Cup Win in Méribel

10. August 2014

UCI Mountainbike Weltcup - Windham (NY), USA

Three team riders in the top ten, two of them on the podium, first place in the team ranking - and Julien Absalon just a small step away from the sixth overall World Cup victory of his career. This is the impressive record of the BMC Racing Team at the World Cup in Windham (NY), USA.

Julien Absalon and Lukas Flückiger fought a hard and dusty battle against Swiss champion Nino Schurter in the humid heat of the Catskill Mountains. Finally, the trio was separated by only 16 seconds, with Absalon only six seconds away from his 30th World Cup victory.

"I wasn't putting everything on the line. A mechanical would have been a disaster concerning the overall standings" said Absalon after the race. "I was super strong on the climbs, but in the end I couldn't close the gaps than opened on the descents with me riding my hardtail", he reasoned his cautious riding style. However, he was quite happy at the end of the day, because he will have a nice lead for the final World Cup race in Meribel.

In Windham Lukas Flückiger was able to demonstrate what he is capable of. Even World champion Schurter was quite impressed, as Flückiger stormed down the six minute descent on his full suspenstion bike fourstroke FS01 in "kamikaze speed." He even launched a vigourous attack in lap three. "I just had a go, because I didn't want to blame myself for not trying it. I wasn't exactly slow in the climb, but not fast enough for a win either," he said with a grin.

He was very happy about third place which he successfully defended against Australian Daniel McConnell. Ralph Näf was pleased with his tenth position. "I had a really bad start into the race again but otherwise everything was fine. When I reached tenth position, I didn't take any more chances," said Näf. He also played a figure in the team's fifth victory in the team ranking this year and their second overall win in the team standings.
