The Absalon legend grows, Milatz stages a drama

French National Championships Auron / German National Championships Bad Salzdetfurth

Julien Absalon and Moritz Milatz have won the national championships in France and in Germany on their BMC Team Elite TE01 bikes. Absalon won his eleventh consecutive title, Milatz his fourth overall.

Team BMC had made a brand new European champion outfit for its French rider. But after 1:29 hours he will maybe not wear his new blue star jersey again. This is the span of time that Julien Absalon needed to complete ten years of invincibility and to add the eleventh elite title to his tally.

If one adds the U23 years, the rider the Vosges has not been beaten at Nationals since 2001! A record in the history of French cycling. "The best way to control a race is to take the lead," Absalon stated quite calmly after he had crossed the finish line. After the first lap of the race, no one was able to keep up with the double Olympic champion.

The exciting thing about this French Championship which took place in Auron in the Alpes-Maritimes, was who will be on the podium along with Absalon. "I am in my thirties and I have survived. No, seriously, this title shows that I have been successful for a long time now, and I am very proud of it."

For the record, Miguel Martinez finished the race in second place - just as he did ten years ago, when Absalon won his first national title. On the physically demanding course in the south of France, the BMC Teamelite TE01 was certainly the ideal weapon to gain another tricolor jersey. Julien Absalon will now prepare for the next World Cup race in Vallnord (July 27), where he hopes to get his first World Cup victory in the BMC colors.

Milatz wins exciting race
"That was a dramatic race, the most exciting one I've ever experienced": Moritz Milatz was an actor and screenwriter at the same time. Suffering a flat tire in the first round, he created the appropriate dramatic suspense right from the beginning.
As an actor in his own play Milatz fulfilled the role of the hunter in an excellent way and came back from being 35 seconds behind the top riders. Then he first saw to it that Manuel Fumic lost contact, and after that he outpaced Wolfram Kurschat.
However another setback occurred when he missed his gel in the feeding zone. "I really had to fight then. I had a momentary lapse of concentration and even crashed, " he explained about this intermezzo.
But on this day he was strong enough to write a happy ending for his championship drama. "I was in really good mood today. After all that happened in this race, it is even more rewarding to stand here as the winner. I love this course and the fantastic crowd, "said a beaming Moritz Milatz, who feels „at home" in Bad Salzdetfurth. It was his fifth victory gained in this small town in the Harz Mountains.
