Absalon delivers great fight and makes the most for his team

3. August 2014

UCI Mountainbike Weltcup - Mont Sainte Anne, Kanada

Gaining second place behind World champion Nino Schurter, BMC’s Julien Absalon made the most for his team at the World cup race in Mont Sainte Anne. After an extremely tough competition, he was also a guarantee for victory in the team standings. Finishing fourth, Lukas Flückiger fulfilled his hope of entering the podium.

Being a true classic, the Canadian race near the St. Lawrence River was an extreme test for Julien Absalon. And this was not just due to the challenging race  course and the sultry hot weather. He also had decided to travel as late as Friday due to the birth of his second son. Moreover, he felt somewhat tired and emotionally touched. Summing up his feelings he said: „It was not easy for me to leave my family behind and to travel all by myself. But the birth of my son has also given me lots of positive energy.“ Given these circumstances, he even claimed to have done a „perfect race.“

After a bad start Absalon bravely fought his way from 20th position up to Nino Schurter in the lead. Following this he and the Swiss rider commanded the race.  But when Schurter finally launched his decisive attack, Absalon was no longer able to set up a counter-attack. He had had to play catch-up too many times before. „However, now I will have a lead of 260 points in Windham, and that’s almost perfect,“ said the Frenchman.

Absalon nevertheless also had a chance to enter top position on the podium on Sunday. BMC Racing Team won the team ranking for the fourth time this season and is almost set to win the overall standings. Lukas Flückiger played an import part in this success story because he managed to finish fourth due to an impressive comeback. „This gives me lots of self-confidence. And I believe that things will be going even better next week,“ said Flückiger.

Moritz Milatz finished 13th and was not one hundred per cent happy about this result. „After the first half of the race I was shelled. However, this result is not really that bad,“ said the German.
