Trofeo Deià: Van Avermaet Ninth

7. February 2012

Deià, Spain

Greg Van Avermaet registered the BMC Racing Team's first top 10 finish at the Trofeo de Mallorca when he sprinted to ninth place Tuesday in the Trofeo Deià.

Frank in The Break

Van Avermaet and teammates Steve Cummings and Tejay van Garderen were part of a group chasing a five-man breakaway up the final climb, 30 kilometers from the finish of the 151 km race. The leading group splintered on the descent, with Lars Petter Nordhaug (Sky Procycling) soloing to the win. Van Avermaet took fourth in the bunch sprint 57 seconds later. "It was quite hard but the team did a good job," Van Avermaet said. "We had Mathias (Frank) in the earlier breakaway so it was perfect for us." Frank was part of a 13-rider move that gained a maximum two minutes' advantage before being caught. "It was a really hard day for such an early season race," BMC Racing Team Assistant Director Michael Sayers said. "Mathias did an excellent ride today and the team as a group rode well together well at the front of the peloton to chase and try to bring the winning break back."
