Ster ZLM Toer, Stage 1: Wyss Eighth

13. June 2013

Danilo Wyss registered his seventh top 10 placing of the season for the BMC Racing Team – and his first since the Tour de Romandie – with eighth on Stage 1 Thursday at Ster ZLM Toer.

A Nervous Day
Wyss said there was little that was easy about the 175.7-kilometer race that was won by Theo Bos (Blanco Pro Cycling Team) ahead of André Greipel (Lotto Belisol) and Mark Cavendish (Omega Pharma-Quick Step). "It was a really nervous day – with the wind from the side and the front – and a lot of rain at the end," Wyss said. So it was not an easy day. I look forward to a bit more of a hilly stage. It will be better for me. Today, against Greipel, Cavendish and Marcel Kittel – in a downhill sprint – it was hard to do a good result. But I was happy to be at the front." Prologue winner Robert Wagner (Blanco) kept the overall lead while Wyss is 19th, 51 seconds back. "This morning, in the meeting, I told him to keep an eye on GC and we could be up there with a couple good, hard days coming up," BMC Racing Team Assistant Director Max Sciandri said. The BMC Racing Team, which started the race with only six riders, lost the services of two on Thursday: Klaas Lodewyck did not start and Yannick Eijssen withdrew mid-race. "Klaas is feeling tired after the Giro d'Italia," BMC Racing Team Dr. Giovanni Ruffini said, "and Yannick was fatigued from the Critérium du Dauphiné last week."
