Giro d'Italia, Stage 9: Crash On The Corner

14. May 2012

Danilo Wyss was the BMC Racing Team rider in the best position for a stage win Monday at the Giro d'Italia. But a crash on the final corner brought his chances to a sudden stop.

Phinney Feeling Better

Wyss was among the top 10 riders and riding immediately behind world road champion Mark Cavendish as the road curved sharply to the left about 400 meters from the finish of the 166 kilometer race. "I was on the outside so I didn't crash, but I almost went out of the road," Wyss said. "I'm disappointed because I've had a really good start to the Giro and this was the first time I could have been in the top 10 of a finish. It's still a long way to Milano, so I'm sure I will try again on one of the days." Taylor Phinney, who finished 6:20 behind stage winner Francisco Ventoso (Movistar Team), said he is feeling better by the day. "I feel like I've gotten back from my crashes," Phinney said. "Today was really nice. The team gave me free reign to take it easy on the last little climbs and stay safe. So that's what I did. I want to definitely make it to the rest day. I felt like my legs were good yesterday so hopefully I'm coming back to my old self before my crashes. Most important is just to stay safe and stay in the race."
